Foursquare not Friending Facebook…

I disagree with Foursquare Founder Dennis Crowley's assessment of the situation. In the article below, he believes Foursquare is at a competitive advantage because in Facebook you will "friend" anyone. However, with Foursquare, he says you will be more selective in who you share your location information...

Facebook Isn't For Real Life Friends Anymore, Says Foursquare's Dennis Crowley

Facebook plans to clone Foursquare's central service -- the ability for site members to use their phones
to "check-in" from restaurants and bars -- and make it a mere Facebook feature.

But Foursquare cofounder Dennis Crowley says there's something Facebook can't clone: the real-life friendships between Foursquare users.

"Facebook used to be who your friends are, now it's everyone," Dennis told us in an interview.

That's right Facebook, Dennis Crowley says your social network is now a place where people will become "friends" with people they aren't actually real-life friends with. On Foursquare, his argument goes, users are only "friends" with people they truly wouldn't mind running into during a night out.

  1. Shonali Burke  I do see Dennis’ point, though, I get FB friend requests from a ton of people I don’t know. I don’t accept them, since I haven’t built a relationship with them, even if it’s just via engaging in SM. With Foursquare, ’tis true, I’m EVEN more selective. I think the point is what is one using FB or 4Sq for?

Eric Goldstein  RT @mobilediner Foursquare not Friending Facebook… http://amplify.com/u/2r9l @shonali, one thing i don’t understand about Foursquare in this regard (i haven’t used it, so forgive me) is that people seem to post their Foursquare updates on Twitter, where they are typically the least selective about how can follow them…so why does it matter how selective you are about choosing who you connect with on Foursquare?

      1. Hugh Briss  Foursquare and Gowalla are screwed and won’t be around long once Facebook implements this new feature. His argument makes no sense either because I’m sure FB will add a way for people to select the friends they want to share their location information with.

        1. Shonali Burke  Eric, you’re absolutely right, for example, I do that occasionally (esp. in the beginning when I was even more of a Foursquare novice than I am now… note the qualification. ;-)) Here’s my rationale, though - I only do that if I want a recommendation/am asking a question about something, and I figure because my Twitter network is much larger than my 4Sq “friends,” the chances of someone seeing/responding are much higher (as I did the other day, when I was at the post office and frustrated I couldn’t buy stamps at an ATM).

On 4Sq, though, I’m extremely particular about which friend requests I accept; just because someone’s connected to me on Twitter doesn’t mean they get to see where I am and what I’m doing all the time - so it has to be someone I know and feel comfortable with IRL, or at least have an extremely high level of comfort with online. Safety is a primary concern as well. And I never, ever check in from home.

I don’t know if that makes me the rule or exception - but that’s how I do it. With Facebook too, I’m fairly selective about friending, though I believe I’m at the conservative end of the scale. I’m not a LiON kind of person. But since I use Facebook and LinkedIn as channels for my blog, as well as to engage with those communities, I’m not as “tight” as I am on FB as I am on 4Sq. LinkedIn - I’m very tight.

Probably more of a response than you bargained for, LOL.

          1. Eric Goldstein  Not at all - thanks Shonali.

            1. Chris Parandian  i share Hugh’s view. If Facebook gets it right, it will be very tough for Foursquare and the others.

              1. CharlestonAgency Avericom  Foursquare doesn’t stand a chance, they should start drafting up a bid proposal now before Facebook comes knocking at their door…

                1. Clinton Fein  God, why is identity management still so antiquated? Anyone?
